IEC โ€” International Electrotechnical Commission

Publisher of the IEC 60079 series โ€” the foundation for international explosion protection standards.

IECEx Certification System

International certification scheme for Ex equipment. Certificate database, ExCB listing, and conformity marks. Accepted in 35+ countries.

European Commission โ€” ATEX Directives

Official EU page for ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU (equipment) and 1999/92/EC (workplace safety). Harmonised standards, guidance, and Notified Body listing.

HSE UK โ€” DSEAR Regulations

UK Health & Safety Executive guidance on the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR). Post-Brexit UK equivalent of ATEX workplace directive.

OSHA โ€” Hazardous Locations (US)

US Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidance on hazardous (classified) locations, NEC Article 500/505, and Class/Division/Zone systems.

NFPA โ€” National Fire Protection Association

Publisher of the National Electrical Code (NEC/NFPA 70). Articles 500โ€“506 define US hazardous location classification and wiring methods.

CENELEC

European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization. Develops EN versions of IEC 60079 standards used for ATEX compliance.

Certification Bodies

DEKRA

Major EU Notified Body and IECEx ExCB. Testing, certification, and inspection for ATEX and IECEx. Includes former KEMA and DEKRA Testing & Certification.

PTB โ€” Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt

Germany's national metrology institute. Division 3.3 handles explosion protection testing and certification. One of the original Ex certification bodies.

SGS Baseefa

UK-based Notified Body and IECEx ExCB (formerly BASEEFA). Testing and certification for all Ex protection concepts. Part of SGS Group.

INERIS

French national institute for industrial environment and risks. Major EU Notified Body for ATEX and IECEx certification. Also publishes explosion protection research.

CSA Group

Canadian certification body. Tests and certifies for CSA C22.2, NEC, ATEX, and IECEx. Important for North American market access.

UL Solutions

US-based testing and certification. UL listing for hazardous locations per NEC. Also operates as ATEX Notified Body and IECEx ExCB.

FM Approvals

Part of FM Global. Tests and approves equipment for hazardous locations. FM Approved mark is widely recognized in the US and internationally.

German testing and certification organization. EU Notified Body for ATEX. Offices worldwide with regional Ex testing capabilities.

Training & Competency

CompEx โ€” Competency in Explosive Atmospheres

International competency certification scheme for personnel working in explosive atmospheres. Managed by JTL. Required by many employers for Ex installation and inspection work.

ExVeritas

Independent Ex certification consultancy. Helps manufacturers navigate ATEX/IECEx certification. Also publishes educational resources on explosion protection.

EEMUA

Engineering Equipment and Materials Users' Association. Publishes best-practice guides including EEMUA 186 on alarm management and hazardous area guidance.

IECEx CoPC โ€” Certificate of Personnel Competence

International personnel certification under IECEx. Verifies competence for working with Ex equipment. Database of certified individuals.

German manufacturer of industrial automation and Ex-rated interface technology. Known for intrinsic safety barriers, isolators, and fieldbus solutions.

MTL (Eaton)

Specialist in intrinsic safety barriers and surge protection for hazardous areas. Now part of Eaton. Zener barriers and galvanic isolators.

Hubbell / Killark

US manufacturer of hazardous location lighting, junction boxes, and electrical fittings. Strong presence in NEC Class I, Division 1 markets.
